Hailing from a broken home in the wilds of Colorado, she relied on her aim to bring game home for dinner. For years, she yearned to leave that place, or better yet, for the power to do more than wait and hide. When an army recruiter showed up in town, she saw her ticket out, and ran away to enlist. Malnourished as she was, it didn’t take much to disguise herself as a young man. After training, she was assigned to a unit under Commander Whitlaw, where she distinguished herself with loyalty, stealth, and a sharp eye. She greatly preferred this new life. But the longer time went on, the more difficult it was to hide her secret. When she confessed, Whitlaw only asked her what difference her words made in the face of her actions. The unit turned a blind eye, and Conly stayed. She followed Whitlaw without hesitation when he deserted to find the unit’s missing scouts, even though she couldn’t have imagined what awaited them at their destination. Conly soon found she could stomach Corruption. The part of her that could feel surprise and horror had died long ago. But it was hard to watch her comrades succumb to the disease, to dig their graves, and to shoot them herself when they clawed back out.
